1. Characteristics of the seal itself
Material properties: The material of the seal has a significant impact on its sealing performance. For example, there are various types of materials for rubber seals, and different rubber materials (such as nitrile rubber, fluororubber, etc.) have different hardness, elasticity, oil resistance, and temperature resistance. Nitrile rubber seals have relatively limited oil and temperature resistance, and are generally suitable for environments with temperatures ranging from -30 ℃ to 100 ℃; Fluororubber sealing rings have excellent high temperature resistance, oil resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, and can maintain good sealing performance in high temperature environments ranging from -20 ℃ to 200 ℃.
Dimensional accuracy: The dimensional accuracy of the seal directly affects the sealing effect. If the size of the sealing ring does not meet the requirements, such as an inner diameter that is too large or an outer diameter that is too small, it will not be able to tightly fit the shaft or sleeve of the ball spline, resulting in leakage. Taking O-ring seals as an example, the dimensional tolerances of their inner and outer diameters need to be strictly controlled to ensure that they can generate appropriate compression after installation. Generally, a compression of around 15% -30% is more suitable to ensure good sealing performance.
Structural design of seals: Seals with different structures have different sealing characteristics. The lip structure design of a lip seal ring is crucial, as factors such as lip thickness, angle, and elasticity can affect its fit with the shaft. For example, for a lip seal ring with unidirectional sealing, its lip is designed to be inclined, which can better adapt to the rotation direction of the shaft and prevent liquids or impurities from entering during the rotation process; The bidirectional lip seal ring has two lips, which can prevent pollutants from entering on both sides at the same time.
2. Motion state of ball spline
Speed: The speed of the ball spline will affect the sealing performance. When rotating at high speed, the seal will be subjected to centrifugal force. For example, when using a lip seal ring, the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation may create a gap between the lip of the seal ring and the shaft surface, thereby reducing the sealing effect. In addition, high-speed rotation may also cause lubricating oil to leak from the seal under the action of centrifugal force. Generally speaking, the higher the rotational speed, the higher the requirements for seals, and it is necessary to choose seals with good resistance to centrifugal force.
Axial movement: When the ball spline has axial movement, the seal needs to be able to adapt to this movement without losing its sealing function. For sealing methods such as telescopic dust covers, their telescopic performance must be able to meet the maximum axial travel of the ball spline. If the expansion and contraction range of the dust cover is insufficient, it may rupture or seal poorly during axial movement. Similarly, for sealing rings, frequent axial movement may cause relative displacement between the sealing ring and the shaft or sleeve, affecting the sealing effect.
3. Work environment factors
Temperature changes: Temperature changes can have a significant impact on the performance of seals. In high temperature environments, the material of the seal may soften and age, leading to a decrease in elasticity. For example, ordinary rubber seals lose their elasticity at high temperatures and cannot tightly adhere to the ball spline, resulting in leakage. On the contrary, in low-temperature environments, seals may become hard, brittle, and prone to cracking. If the ball spline used in extremely cold regions does not have good low-temperature performance of the seal, seal failure may occur.
Corrosion caused by chemical substances: If the ball spline works in an environment with chemical substances such as acid, alkali, organic solvents, etc., the seal needs to have good chemical corrosion resistance. For example, in the ball spline of chemical equipment, if the seal cannot resist the erosion of chemical substances, the sealing material will be corroded, resulting in a decrease in sealing performance. Seals made of materials with good chemical corrosion resistance such as fluororubber can function better in this environment.
Concentration of dust and impurities: In environments with high levels of dust and impurities, the burden on seals is heavier. A large amount of dust and impurities may accumulate around the seal, and even enter the small gaps between the seal and the shaft or sleeve, damaging the sealing structure. For example, in the ball spline of mining machinery, if the sealing performance is poor, dust can easily enter, accelerate the wear of the ball spline, and further reduce the sealing performance.
4. Installation and maintenance status
Installation method and accuracy: The installation method and accuracy of the seal are crucial to the sealing performance. If the seal is damaged during installation, such as scratched, twisted, etc., it will affect its sealing effect. For example, when installing O-ring seals, using sharp tools may scratch the surface of the seal ring. In addition, the positional accuracy of the seal installation is also important to ensure that the seal is installed in the correct position and tightly fits the shaft and sleeve of the ball spline.
Regular maintenance and inspection: Seals require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure their sealing performance. During long-term use, seals may wear, age, or be damaged. For example, the sealing ring may wear out due to long-term friction and needs to be replaced in a timely manner. Regular inspections can promptly detect problems with the seals and take corresponding measures, such as cleaning the dust around the seals, replacing aging seals, etc., to ensure the sealing performance of the ball spline.
