1. Preparations
Preparation of tools and materials: Firstly, suitable tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. should be prepared for disassembling and installing seals. For some special models of ball splines, specialized fixtures may also be required. For example, some ball spline seals are installed in narrow spaces and require the use of a small thin wrench to disassemble. -Prepare new seals and ensure that the model and size of the seals match perfectly with the ball spline. The dimensional tolerance requirements for seals are very strict, and even small errors can affect the sealing effect. At the same time, suitable sealing materials should be selected according to the working environment of the ball spline. For example, for ball splines working in high temperature environments, high-temperature resistant fluororubber seals should be selected.
Cleaning work: Before replacing the seal, the ball spline and its surrounding area must be thoroughly cleaned. Specialized cleaning agents and tools such as lint free cloths, brushes, and cleaning solvents can be used. Remove oil stains, dust, metal shavings and other impurities around the old seals, as these impurities may enter the sealing area when installing new seals, affecting the sealing performance. -After cleaning, ensure that the surface of the ball spline is dry, smooth, and free of any residue. You can use clean compressed air to blow dry or air dry naturally.
2. Disassemble the old seal
Be careful during operation to avoid damage: - When disassembling old seals, be extra careful to avoid using sharp tools to damage the shaft, sleeve, or sealing groove of the ball spline. For example, when disassembling the lip seal ring, sharp tools such as screwdrivers should not be forcefully pried out to avoid scratching the surface of the sealing groove. You can use plastic or wooden tools to gently pry the seal out of its installation position. -For some seals installed by bonding, it is important to use appropriate solvents to dissolve the adhesive and avoid contact with other components of the ball spline to prevent corrosion.
Record the installation status and position of the seals: During the disassembly process, pay attention to observing the installation status of the old seals, including installation direction, position, and whether there are any special installation requirements. Some seals have directionality, such as one-way lip seals, whose lip direction must be correctly installed to achieve good sealing effect. The original installation position and condition of the seal can be recorded by taking photos or drawing simple diagrams, providing reference for installing new seals.
3. Install new sealing components
Correct installation method: When installing new seals, follow the correct method. For O-ring seals, it is usually necessary to gently stretch them and place them on the spline shaft or into the sealing groove, taking care to avoid twisting. During installation, a small amount of lubricant can be applied to the surface of the seal to facilitate installation and prevent damage to the seal during installation. -For lip seals, it is important to ensure that the lips are facing in the correct direction, typically towards the side being sealed. Slowly place the seal into the sealing groove and use a specialized installation tool (such as a sealing ring installation sleeve) to evenly press the seal into the groove, avoiding excessive local force that may cause deformation of the seal.
Ensure proper installation and good sealing: - After installation, check if the seals are installed properly. For example, check if the O-ring seal is fully embedded in the sealing groove, and if the lip of the lip seal is tightly attached to the shaft or sleeve. The installation quality of the seal can be preliminarily judged by gently pressing it and observing whether it can quickly return to its original state. -For some ball splines that use combination sealing, attention should be paid to whether the fit between each sealing element is tight to ensure the overall sealing effect. For example, when using a combination of labyrinth seals and sealing rings, it is necessary to check whether there is a gap between the labyrinth structure and the sealing ring to prevent the formation of leakage channels.
4. Inspection and testing after installation
Appearance inspection: After installation, the sealing part of the ball spline should be visually inspected. Check for any gaps, deformations, or other abnormal conditions around the seal. If the seal is found to have local bulging, cracking, or not installed properly, it should be reinstalled or replaced in a timely manner.
Performance testing: Conduct a simple sealing performance test, such as applying a small amount of grease around the seal and then running the ball spline for a short period of time to observe if there is any grease leakage. For some ball splines with high requirements, specialized sealing testing equipment such as air or water pressure testing devices can be used to conduct more accurate testing of their sealing performance, ensuring that the ball splines can work normally and have good sealing performance after replacing the seals.
