Key factors affecting the lifespan of ball splines

Source of the article:Industry NewsEditor in charge:Dongguan Hanyi Precision Machinery Co., Ltd Publication date:2025-02-20

(1) Load characteristics
Dynamic load: Frequent shifting or impact loads can significantly reduce lifespan, and it is necessary to ensure that the actual load does not exceed the rated dynamic load (C).
Static load: The load under long-term static state needs to meet the static load safety factor (usually requires C0/P0 ≥ 2C0/P0 ≥ 2, C0C0 is the rated static load).
(2) Installation and alignment accuracy
Installation deviation (such as parallelism and perpendicularity deviation) can cause local stress concentration, which may shorten the service life by more than 50%. It is recommended to control installation errors within the manufacturer's allowable range (usually ≤ 0.05mm/m).
(3) Lubrication and Pollution
Insufficient lubrication: When the lubricant film thickness ratio (λ) is less than 1, metal contact wear intensifies and the lifespan may decrease to 10% of the theoretical value.
Particle pollution: Hard particles larger than 1 μ m in the working environment will embed into the track, forming pitting corrosion. It is recommended to use a protection level of IP54 or above and regularly replace the lubricating grease.
(4) Working environment
High temperature (>80 ℃) can cause oxidation and failure of lubricating grease, and high-temperature lubricants (such as perfluoropolyether grease) should be selected; Low temperature (<-20 ℃) may cause material brittleness.
Stainless steel material or surface coating (such as DLC coating) should be selected for corrosive environments.
