Factors affecting the service life of ball splines in Hanyi

1. Load situation
Radial and axial loads: The size of the load borne by the ball spline is a key factor affecting its lifespan. When the load exceeds the rated value, the contact stress between the ball and the raceway will significantly increase. For example, in heavy-duty machinery with high loads, if the ball spline is subjected to radial and axial loads beyond its design capacity for a long time, excessive compression and friction will occur on the surface of the ball and raceway, leading to increased wear and shortening its service life.
Dynamic load: In dynamic load environments, such as automated equipment that frequently starts and stops or machinery with high vibration, ball splines will bear periodic impact loads. This dynamic load will cause the contact force between the ball and the raceway to constantly change, which can easily lead to fatigue wear. For example, in a vibrating feeder, the ball spline is frequently impacted by material falling, and its service life will be significantly lower than that of the same type of ball spline working under stable load.
2. Movement speed
High speed motion: During high-speed operation, the ball of the ball spline will generate high centrifugal force, which will change the contact pressure distribution between the ball and the raceway. Meanwhile, the problem of frictional heating during high-speed motion is also more prominent. For example, in the joint parts of high-speed robots, if the speed of the ball spline is too high, the heat generated by friction may cause the lubricant performance to decrease or even fail, thereby increasing wear and reducing service life.
Frequent reciprocating motion: For ball splines that frequently perform reciprocating linear motion, such as the tool feed system of precision machine tools, the change in rolling direction of the ball during each reciprocating motion will generate a certain impact force and easily cause uneven wear of the ball. If the motion speed is too fast and frequently reciprocates, this wear will accelerate and accumulate, shortening the service life of the ball spline.
3. Working environment
Temperature: In high temperature environments, the material properties of ball splines may change, such as thermal expansion causing a decrease in fit clearance and increased friction; Meanwhile, lubricants are also prone to volatilization or oxidation failure. On the contrary, in low-temperature environments, materials may become brittle and the flowability of lubricants may decrease. For example, in the transmission equipment near high-temperature metallurgical furnaces, if suitable high-temperature resistant ball splines and lubricants are not selected, their service life will be significantly shortened.
Humidity and corrosive media: A humid environment can easily cause rusting of the ball spline, while corrosive media (such as acids, alkalis, and other chemicals) can directly corrode the surfaces of the ball, spline shaft, and spline sleeve. Ball splines in chemical equipment may be quickly corroded and damaged without proper anti-corrosion measures.
Dust and impurities: In a dusty environment, dust and impurities can easily enter the interior of the ball spline, mix with lubricants, and form abrasive wear. For example, in mining or construction machinery, a large amount of dust particles entering the ball spline will continuously wear down the surface of the ball and raceway like sandpaper.
4. Lubrication condition
Lubricant quality: High quality lubricants can effectively reduce the friction coefficient between balls and raceways, reducing wear. If inferior or unsuitable lubricants are used, such as ordinary lubricating grease in high load and high temperature environments, their wear resistance and high temperature resistance will be insufficient, which will lead to increased wear of the ball spline.
Lubrication cycle: Proper lubrication cycle is crucial for maintaining good performance of ball splines. If lubrication is not carried out for a long time, the lubricant will dry up, and the friction between the ball and the raceway will increase, accelerating wear. On the contrary, excessive lubrication may also lead to lubricant leakage, entering other components, affecting the normal operation of the equipment, and also causing waste.
Accuracy and installation situation
Installation accuracy: During the installation process of ball splines, if the coaxiality, parallelism, and other accuracy of the spline shaft and spline sleeve do not meet the requirements, it will cause uneven force on the balls. For example, if there is a large coaxiality error during installation, the ball bearings will bear additional lateral forces during rolling, leading to increased local wear and affecting their service life.
Pre tightening force: For ball splines with pre tightening requirements, the magnitude of the pre tightening force can also affect their lifespan. Excessive pre tightening force will increase the friction between the ball and the raceway, leading to accelerated wear; If the pre tightening force is too small, the gap cannot be eliminated, and vibration and impact may occur during the movement, which will also affect the service life
