1. Observe the appearance of the seal
Wear condition: Carefully inspect the surface of the seal for any signs of wear. For example, for rubber seals, if there are scratches, grinding or thinning areas on the surface, it may be due to long-term friction with the shaft or other components. If the degree of wear is deep and has already affected the integrity of the seal, such as local damage or a thickness less than one-third of the original thickness after wear, then it is usually necessary to replace the seal.
Aging phenomenon: The aging of seals will exhibit some obvious characteristics. Rubber seals may become hardened, brittle, or cracked. For example, seals working in high-temperature environments may develop many small cracks on their surfaces after a period of time, similar to rubber products exposed to sunlight. These cracks will damage the sealing performance of the seal, making it unable to effectively block the invasion of external substances or the leakage of internal lubricants.
Deformation issue: Check if the seal is deformed. If the seal undergoes deformation such as twisting, bulging, or collapsing, it will affect the degree of fit between it and the mating components, resulting in a decrease in sealing performance. For example, if the seal is subjected to uneven pressure during installation, it may cause local bulges and gaps at the seal, in which case the seal needs to be replaced.
2. Check the sealing performance
Lubricant leakage situation: If lubricant leakage is found around the ball spline, it is a clear sign that the seal may fail. For example, if traces of lubricating grease or oil are seen at the shaft end or housing joint of the ball spline, it indicates that the seal is no longer able to effectively seal the lubricant inside. It should be noted that a small amount of lubricant leakage may be normal in the initial stage, but if the leakage gradually increases or forms a droplet like leak, the seal needs to be replaced.
Invasion of external pollutants: Observe whether there are dust, impurities, or moisture or other external pollutants entering the interior of the ball spline. If there is obvious accumulation of dust particles or signs of rust (caused by moisture intrusion) inside the ball spline, it indicates that the seal can no longer effectively block external substances, and its sealing performance has decreased. Replacement of the seal should be considered.
3. Consider the work environment and running time
Harsh working environment: If the ball spline works in harsh environments such as high temperature, high humidity, strong corrosiveness, or dusty environments, the service life of the seal will be greatly shortened. For example, in chemical equipment, even if the appearance of the seals does not appear to have any obvious problems, they may have been internally corroded after being exposed to corrosive substances such as strong acids and alkalis for several months and need to be replaced. In this environment, it is necessary to shorten the inspection cycle and prepare for the replacement of seals in advance based on experience and the environmental resistance of the seals.
Long running time: As the running time of the ball spline increases, the seal will gradually wear and age. Even if the working environment is good, after prolonged operation (such as exceeding the specified service life of the seal), the seal should still be inspected and replaced. The service life of seals of different types and materials varies. Generally, reference can be made to the service life data provided by the manufacturer. When approaching or exceeding this time, carefully check the condition of the seals and replace them if necessary. four Monitor the operational status of the monitoring equipment
Abnormal noise or vibration: When the seal is damaged or fails, it may cause changes in the operating state of the ball spline, resulting in abnormal noise or vibration. For example, due to damaged seals, dust entering the interior of the ball spline may interfere with the movement of the ball, causing additional friction and vibration, and producing abnormal sounds. If this situation is found during the operation of the equipment and other component problems are ruled out, it is necessary to check whether the seals need to be replaced.
Precision degradation: For some equipment that requires high precision, such as precision machine tools, robots, etc., damage to seals may affect the accuracy of ball splines. If there is a significant decrease in the positioning accuracy, motion accuracy, etc. of the equipment, in addition to checking other transmission components, it is also necessary to consider whether the seals have failed, causing external factors to interfere with the normal operation of the ball spline.
