1. Lubrication failure aspect
Lubricant leakage: The most direct impact of damaged ball spline seals is lubricant leakage. For example, in grease lubricated ball splines, once the seal is broken or the seal is not tight, the grease will gradually seep out. This not only causes insufficient lubrication, but also pollutes the environment around the equipment. In some workplaces that require high cleanliness, such as food processing equipment, electronic chip manufacturing equipment, etc., lubricant leakage may lead to product quality issues.
Insufficient lubrication leads to increased wear: due to lubricant leakage caused by seal damage, the lubricating film between the ball and raceway cannot be effectively maintained. When the ball moves in a relatively dry environment, the friction force will significantly increase, which accelerates the wear rate of the ball and the raceway. For example, under normal lubrication conditions, ball splines may not show significant wear until several years later, but when lubrication is insufficient, severe wear may occur within a few months, affecting the service life of the ball splines. The accuracy of the worn ball spline decreases, which will further affect the motion accuracy of the equipment.
2. In terms of pollution and impurity invasion
Dust and impurities entering: Damaged seals cannot effectively block external dust, metal shavings, and other impurities from entering the interior of the ball spline. In dusty working environments such as mining machinery, construction equipment, etc., a large amount of dust entering the ball spline will cause friction with the ball and raceway, resulting in abrasive wear. These impurities are like sandpaper, constantly grinding the surface of the ball and raceway, increasing the surface roughness, which in turn leads to an increase in the resistance of the ball spline movement, resulting in vibration and noise.
Moisture and corrosive substances entering: If the seal cannot prevent moisture from entering, the ball spline is prone to rusting in humid environments. For some working environments containing corrosive chemicals, such as chemical equipment, damaged seals can allow corrosive substances such as acid and alkali to enter the interior of the ball spline, corroding the ball, spline shaft, and spline sleeve. After corrosion, the strength of the components decreases and the surface quality deteriorates. In severe cases, it can lead to the failure of the ball spline and even cause equipment failure.
3. In terms of equipment performance and accuracy
Reduced motion accuracy: After the seal is damaged, the motion accuracy of the ball spline will decrease due to the combined effects of insufficient lubrication, increased wear, and impurity invasion. For example, in the tool feed system of precision machine tools, a decrease in the accuracy of ball splines can lead to a decrease in the cutting accuracy of the tool, resulting in a decrease in the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the machined parts. At the joints of the robot, a decrease in the accuracy of the ball spline will affect the robot's motion trajectory and positioning accuracy, resulting in a decrease in the robot's operational accuracy.
Increase equipment vibration and noise: After the seal is damaged, the ball spline will produce abnormal vibration and noise during operation due to poor lubrication, wear, and interference from impurities. This kind of vibration and noise not only affects the normal operation of the equipment, but also interferes with the working environment of the operators. In some noise sensitive situations, such as medical equipment, laboratory equipment, etc., the increased noise may affect the functionality of the equipment.
Shortened equipment lifespan: A series of problems caused by damaged seals, such as increased wear, corrosion, and decreased accuracy, ultimately lead to a shortened overall lifespan of the equipment. As a key transmission component, the performance degradation of ball splines will reduce the reliability of the entire equipment. For example, in an automated production line, if the ball spline frequently malfunctions, it will lead to an increase in the number of shutdowns of the production line, an increase in equipment maintenance costs, and a reduction in the effective service life of the equipment.
